The 2026 Lexus RZ: A Game-Changer With 8-Speed Shifts and Yoke Steering | Gallery

A New Era for the Lexus RZ

The electric vehicle landscape is constantly evolving, but few could have predicted that the Lexus RZ would undergo such a dramatic transformation for 2026. Initially launched as a premium alternative to the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the Lexus RZ has now received a complete overhaul—boasting more power, greater range, and innovative features that make it one of the most intriguing EVs on the market. With simulated gear shifts, steer-by-wire technology, and up to 408 horsepower, the RZ is poised to become a performance-oriented electric SUV like no other.

Lexus RZ

More Power, More Range

One of the biggest drawbacks of the original RZ was its unremarkable range and charging capabilities. Lexus has addressed these concerns head-on:

  • The 2026 RZ features a new 77.0 kWh battery, larger than the one found in the Toyota bZ4X.

  • Improved electric motors, referred to as "eAxles" by Toyota, increase both power output and top speed.

  • Range has been significantly enhanced—by at least 62 miles (100 km) in European specs.

  • The U.S. version could potentially offer up to 300 miles (482 km) per charge, a major improvement over the current 196-266 mile range.

Additionally, charging has been optimized:

  • A 22-kW onboard AC charger now comes standard for faster Level 2 charging.

  • Battery preconditioning has been introduced, improving DC fast charging speeds.

  • Lexus is expected to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS), making Tesla Superchargers accessible to RZ drivers in the future.

Performance Upgrades: The RZ 550e F Sport

Lexus is rolling out three distinct trim levels for the RZ in Europe:

  • RZ 350e (Base Model)

  • RZ 500e (Mid-Level Model)

  • RZ 550e F Sport (Top Model)

The high-performance RZ 550e F Sport is the most exciting addition, boasting 408 horsepower, a retuned suspension, and an advanced all-wheel-drive system that enhances cornering and acceleration. Lexus has fine-tuned torque distribution to improve handling, ensuring a smooth and controlled driving experience whether entering or exiting a turn.

Interactive Manual Drive: Simulated 8-Speed Shifting

Perhaps the most intriguing addition to the 2026 Lexus RZ is Interactive Manual Drive—a system that simulates an 8-speed transmission using paddle shifters. While electric vehicles do not require traditional gearboxes, Lexus has introduced this feature to provide a sportier and more engaging driving experience.

Here’s how it works:

  • Virtual torque is adjusted based on accelerator input and speed, mimicking the feeling of shifting gears.

  • A simulated rev limiter adds to the authenticity.

  • Lexus has even incorporated custom-engineered sound effects to enhance the driving experience.

This technology is similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s system and marks a significant step toward making EVs more enjoyable for driving enthusiasts.

Steer-By-Wire and Yoke Steering: A Glimpse Into the Future

The 2026 RZ will also debut Lexus’ new One Motion Grip steering system—an advanced steer-by-wire setup that replaces the traditional steering wheel with a yoke. Unlike Tesla’s first attempt at a yoke, Lexus has designed this system with variable steering ratios, ensuring:

  • Minimal effort for low-speed turns, making parking easier.

  • Precise control at high speeds, reducing unnecessary hand movements.

  • Increased cabin space, enhancing comfort for both driver and passengers.

This completely electronic system eliminates any mechanical connection between the steering yoke and the wheels, a move that aligns with Lexus and Toyota’s broader goals for EV innovation.

What’s Next for the Lexus RZ?

Lexus has not yet announced official pricing for the 2026 RZ, but the new model is expected to hit European markets this fall. U.S. customers can anticipate a similar timeline, with additional details to be revealed in the coming months.

With more range, faster charging, greater power, and cutting-edge technology, the Lexus RZ has transformed from an underwhelming luxury EV into a pioneering electric SUV. Whether you're a performance enthusiast excited about simulated shifting, a tech lover intrigued by steer-by-wire, or a long-distance driver needing better range, the 2026 RZ has something to offer.
