Electric cars are evolving beyond just transportation — they’re becoming home energy solutions. And for Kia EV9 owners in the U.S., that future is arriving sooner than you might think. Thanks to vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities and a new partnership with Wallbox, the EV9 will soon double as a backup power source for your house, capable of keeping the lights on for several days during an outage.

What’s Vehicle-to-Home?
Vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology allows an electric car to send power back into your house, essentially turning the car into a giant battery on wheels. The Kia EV9, with its sizable battery pack (up to 99.8 kWh), is perfectly suited for this. With the larger battery, the EV9 can supply power to a typical home for nearly four days if the household uses around 25 kWh per day.
But it’s not just for emergencies. EV9 owners can also use V2H to save money by powering their home with cheaper off-peak electricity stored in the car’s battery, then recharging the EV during low-cost hours. Solar integration adds another layer, allowing solar panels to charge the car during the day and the car to power the home at night.
The Key: Wallbox Quasar 2 Bidirectional Charger
Here’s the catch — this isn’t just a matter of plugging your EV9 into a regular wall outlet. To unlock these home-powering features, you’ll need a bidirectional charger, and right now, the only compatible option in the U.S. is the Wallbox Quasar 2.
This cutting-edge charger handles both sending power to the car and pulling power from it. It can manage up to 12.8 kW on DC and 12.48 kW on AC. It also offers other useful features like dynamic load management (so you don’t overload your system), solar charging integration, and even vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality, meaning the EV9 could potentially sell electricity back to the grid in the future.
Pre-Orders Are Open (With A Catch | Kia EV9)
Wallbox is already taking pre-orders for the Quasar 2, with deliveries expected to start in June 2025. There’s also some good news for EV9 owners: the bundle, which includes the charger and a Power Recovery Unit, is eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $1,000.
However, the initial rollout is limited to residents of just seven states:
California
Texas
Florida
New York
Washington
New Jersey
Illinois
A nationwide release is expected later on.
Why This Matters
With extreme weather events causing more frequent power outages, and with energy costs fluctuating dramatically, the ability to turn your vehicle into a home backup battery is a game changer. For EV9 owners, this means more than just driving electric — it means controlling your energy future.
Plus, with more states like California considering mandates for bidirectional charging capability in future EVs, this technology could soon become the norm rather than the exception.
What You Need To Do
If you’re a Kia EV9 owner in one of the eligible states, you can reserve your Quasar 2 system now directly through Wallbox. And if you’re considering buying an EV9, this home-powering feature could be one more reason to make the switch.
Power your ride. Power your home. All from one vehicle.
