The automotive industry is accelerating toward a more sustainable future, and Mercedes-Benz is leading the charge with a revolutionary breakthrough in electric vehicle (EV) technology. In a pioneering collaboration with Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP), the luxury automaker has launched road tests of a solid-state battery in a modified EQS. This cutting-edge innovation promises a 25% longer range, enhanced safety, and improved efficiency—ushering in a new era of electric mobility.

Revolutionary Solid-State Battery Technology
The newly developed solid-state battery features lithium-metal anodes, which offer a higher energy density of up to 450 Wh/kg at the cell level. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that rely on liquid electrolytes, this solid-state design utilizes a solid electrolyte. This innovation not only increases energy density but also enhances safety and reduces battery weight, making EVs more practical and efficient.
Factorial Energy, a key partner in this development, provided its FEST® solid-state platform to power the battery cells. Since initiating their collaboration in 2021, Mercedes-Benz and Factorial Energy have worked diligently to bring this technology from the laboratory to public roads.
Enhanced Performance and Safety
The modified EQS prototype equipped with this solid-state battery can achieve a driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) on a single charge—25% more than its conventional counterparts. Safety is also paramount, with the battery's solid electrolyte offering greater thermal stability and reduced risk of fire. Additionally, the innovative floating cell carrier compensates for material expansion during charging and discharging, extending battery lifespan and maintaining consistent performance.
Mercedes AMG HPP's Formula 1 technology plays a crucial role in this advancement, particularly in optimizing energy efficiency and performance. Passive cooling systems further enhance efficiency by reducing battery weight and improving thermal management without additional energy consumption.
Industry Leaders' Perspectives
Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, highlighted the significance of this achievement: “Developing an automotive-scale solid-state battery underlines our commitment to innovation and sustainability. We’re excited to announce that we’ve started road testing with a prototype vehicle equipped with this advanced technology.”
Factorial Energy’s CEO, Siyu Huang, echoed this sentiment: “Being the first to successfully integrate lithium-metal solid-state batteries into a production vehicle platform marks a historic achievement in electric mobility. Our collaboration with Mercedes-Benz proves that the future of electric vehicles is not just a vision, but a reality we’re delivering today.”
The Road Ahead
Mercedes-Benz plans to conduct extensive laboratory and road tests over the coming months to evaluate the battery’s performance, safety, and integration potential for future production models. This collaborative effort exemplifies the growing synergy between high-performance motorsport engineering and sustainable electric mobility.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, innovations like this solid-state battery will play a crucial role in advancing the adoption of EVs worldwide. With Mercedes-Benz and Formula 1 technology leading the way, the future of electric driving looks more efficient, practical, and sustainable than ever before.
